Army general calls 2023 “one of the toughest recruiting landscapes” he’s seen in his career.
The U.S. military’s four recruiting chiefs testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee this month, where they shared their experience with the increasing difficulty of enlisting new Americans in the armed services. Army Major General Johnny Davis, commanding general of the Army Recruiting Command, told the committee that 2023 has been “one of the toughest recruiting landscapes I’ve seen in over 33 years of service.”
The four leaders cited several reasons for these difficulties. They noted that there are fewer Americans who qualify for military service, and the COVID-19 pandemic prevented recruiters from meeting in person with young people for over a year.
As a result of these and other issues, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force failed to meet their recruiting goals for the 2023 fiscal year. The Marine Corps and Space Force met their goals, though their recruiters encountered the same hurdles experienced by the other military branches.
